Lieber's often engaging book provides a loosely drawn sketch of de Kooning's life. The author became a friend of de Kooning and his wife Elaine in the 1980s, serving as the artist's secretary and curator from 1987 to 1989. He made careful notes of episodes they recalled. These somewhat random anecdotes are arranged according to the period referred to, from the artist's childhood memories of 1907 through 1988. Read in conjunction with fairly fulsome footnotes (no bibliography), one gains a feeling for de Kooning's life--his early struggles, poverty, designing window displays, his techniques as a painter, the raucous exuberant life of the group of artists at the height of their notoriety as members of the Abstract Expressionists, and the late years when de Kooning settled into his studio (layout diagramed) in East Hampton (New York). This volume presupposes a knowledge of the artist's work and the importance of the Abstract Expressionists. The illustrations are largely of the artist in his studio in the 1980s. This work supplements important scholarly works such as Marla Prather's Willem de Kooning: Paintings, from the National Gallery of Art (CH, Dec'94), and Willem de Kooning: The Late Paintings, The 1980s, from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1995).
