CHOICE Review

Konigsberg (film and English, Univ. of Michigan) offers the second edition of his comprehensive reference source concerning all aspects of the film industry. The work has nearly 4,000 entries, alphabetically arranged and including more than 250 line drawings and photographs. Entries range in length from a paragraph to several pages. Recent advances in film technology are discussed (e.g., computer animation, DSS, DVD, HDTV) as well as practical terms regarding film production (e.g., "film filter," "final cut"). Film companies like Miramax are examined as well as film associations like the Screen Actor's Guild. The photographs and drawings are carefully selected and supplement the entries. A number of entries that span several pages give detailed and fascinating descriptions of the Hollywood star system and special effects in film. Invaluable to undergraduate and graduate film programs and to film professionals who need a concise film reference work. V. Viator Nicholls State University
