CHOICE Review

Viscount Linley, nephew of Queen Elizabeth II, is owner of the prestigious company David Linley Ltd., manufacturer of classical furniture using carvings, inlays, and marquetry. For the first time, from a contemporary point of view, this book covers classicism from its origins in ancient Greece, its rebirth in Renaissance Italy, to its golden age in 18th-century France, England, and America. With five chapters, Linley, in a clear and straightforward manner, has assembled a directory of furniture, a pattern book of perfection (classical design)-- including a 60-foot table his firm made for the Metropolitan Museum of Art-- which covers the evolution of styles in chairs, tables, cabinets, screens, sofas, and daybeds. In the final chapters, Linley explores ways of linking old and new designs. The 110 color photographs (from many different sources), 30 line drawings by 18th-century masters, and watercolor sketches from Linley's design books are superb. Book design by Bernard Higton is exceptionally fine. General; undergraduate through professional. J. Risley; Wesleyan University
